Volume 9 in 6, 5, 4…
As University Research Day Approaches on April 17th, the time until Inventio, Volume 9 dwindles to just a few days. But what has the publication period looked like for the staff? Read below and print your own Countdown to Inventio Calendar!
Six Published Authors
Volume 9 will contain the excellent work of six authors. From scholarship on art to essays on politics and history, these authors illustrate the breadth and depth of undergraduate research at CUA by achieving individual excellence. Learn more about the authors!
Five Days of Tabling
Seeking to promote undergraduate research, the board members took to the public square, a.k.a. The Pryzbyla Center lobby. Students on their way to lunch found food for thought instead as they were called to the table to talk Inventio. Amid discussions about Volume 9 and upcoming submissions for Volume 10, students were challenged to think back to the essays they had connected to the most during their time at CUA.
Four LC Outreach Visits
Thanks to collaboration with the School of Philosophy, Inventio’s Board Members each visited four philosophy Classes. In these classes, the board members had the chance to share what personally drew them to Inventio and encourage over 600 members of the class of 2027 to put their best self into their education by preparing their papers for the Phi Beta Kappa Award.
Three Publisher and Editor Visits
The board hopped on the Metro to visit the editors of The American Scholar at the Phi Beta Kappa Headquarters. While there the board got to learn about the operation of the quarterly journal in addition to what a career in editing is like. Back at CUA, the board enjoyed a lively conversation about publishing methods and challenges with staff from The Catholic University of America Press. Finally, the board climbed to the top floor Mullen to learn more about editing from The Catholic Historical Review.
Two Cardinal Preview Days
Board members were a constant presence during Cardinal Preview day on April 5th. From having a table at the student life fair, to dining with prospective students, board members were able to show potential students the unique place Inventio has in the university community, drawing in future editors and authors! Visit our table during the Cardinal Preview Day on April 19th!
One Volume of Inventio
A semester of editing, promoting, and learning unites the Student Editorial Board and leads finally to its goal: Volume 9 of the multidisciplinary undergraduate research journal of The Catholic University of America. Available here on April 17th!
Meet the Editorial Board
Damiana Zaborowski, a new member of Inventio’s Student Editorial Board, is sophomore in the honors program studying for a nursing major and philosophy minor. Damiana joined Inventio’s staff in order to bring her artistic interests into relation with her education as a whole. Outside of her busy and diverse course load, Damiana serves as the vice president of the CUA chapter of the Thomistic Institute, a formation chair of Cardinals for Life, and a CACS tutor. In her remaining free time, Damiana enjoys being a member of the medieval society and sailing on the club sailing team.
As the Head Layout Editor, Damiana is tasked with creating the physical product of the journal. Everything from page layout to cover design is led by her. Her creative process for Inventio often involves determining imaging techniques that are both attractive and logical. On a small scale, this might mean making a page look balanced while not splitting words in half. On a larger scale this means creating a cover that has a place as a distinctive continuation of previous Volumes of the journal. Damiana states that her position “has been (and continues to be) a wonderful experience that has not only provided me with marketable skills, but has also been a great way to stay in touch with my literary and artistic side.”
